Playing the drums is a great way to learn rhythms on a variety of different textures and percussive instruments.  It’s a fantastic way to jump right into music making, and exploring sounds and the best part is that it's easy to get started and really fun right away!

Becoming proficient at an instrument takes work and effort. The best musicians of all time practiced for hours on end in technical and musical skills.

Here are some ways to keep up your drumming skills and make your practice time more productive.

DIVIDE UP YOUR PRACTICING

To become great at a skill, we need to spend a lot of time at it, here are some ways to divide things up!

  1. Basics – Warm up with your exercises, here are a few that may be helpful

  2. Songs and Pieces– Now’s the time to work on the songs and riffs that your teacher gave you! Work on that beat is particularly difficult, or listen to some Youtube videos on your favorite drummers and try to imitate them. Ask your teacher for advice and always remember to practice with a metronome so you can have great rhythm.

  3. Exploration and Experimentation– Try new beats and whatever you’ve heard that comes to you! Listen to your favorite recordings and make some things up! Play some licks on a different set of percussion instruments to experiment with a variety of sounds and timbres!

Don’t Get Stuck

Mix things up so that you dont repeat the same things every day. As you master one set of exercises, find new ones to keep yourself engaged. If things become too overwhelming, take a step back and try something a bit less challenging! You can always find a way to grow in your drum skills while you are mixing things up.

Practicing Quietly

Drums can be a difficult instrument to practice because of how LOUD it can be! Check out some of these tips on how to lower that volume so you dont drive everyone crazy.

  • Practice pad – This is great for beginners and for practicing rhythm. You can work on so many things and improve your technique and muscle memory.

  • SoundOff pads – Sound-off pads are round rubber pads that you can place on top of your drums and cymbals to muffle the sound.

  • Zildjan L80 Cymbals – These cymbals reduce sound by 80% and have the same feel as a regular cymbal so you can keep improving your skills.
